Teddy and Sunny are back in this most recent installment of the Fun Jungle series。 In this book, the kids are headed to California after Teddy's home burned down after a careless accident caused a forest fire at the zoo。 While there, Sunny is approached by an agent who wants to exploit her family name and potential as a social media influencer。 Teddy gets caught up with the death of a beached whale and hijacked autopsy。 This is the first book in which the precariousness of Sunny and Teddy's rela Teddy and Sunny are back in this most recent installment of the Fun Jungle series。 In this book, the kids are headed to California after Teddy's home burned down after a careless accident caused a forest fire at the zoo。 While there, Sunny is approached by an agent who wants to exploit her family name and potential as a social media influencer。 Teddy gets caught up with the death of a beached whale and hijacked autopsy。 This is the first book in which the precariousness of Sunny and Teddy's relationship is brought to light; for all their compatibility, their lifestyles and socio-economic backgrounds are quite different。 This wasn't my favorite Fun Jungle book, but if you are a fan and follower of the series, read it! I predict more relationship pieces will be brought into future stories。 。。。more

Adventure meets animals, mystery, zoology, and even ecological themes as well as enough tension to make it fun。Teddy's parents work and live at FunJungle。 When fireworks and a kangaroo collide, the entire surrounding forest and employee housing goes down in flames, although the park remains fine。 While his parents will sleep and live in the office until new homes are built, Teddy takes his friend up on the offer to spend time at her mother's friend's house in California along with the head docto Adventure meets animals, mystery, zoology, and even ecological themes as well as enough tension to make it fun。Teddy's parents work and live at FunJungle。 When fireworks and a kangaroo collide, the entire surrounding forest and employee housing goes down in flames, although the park remains fine。 While his parents will sleep and live in the office until new homes are built, Teddy takes his friend up on the offer to spend time at her mother's friend's house in California along with the head doctor of FunJungle。 While there, a whale explodes all over the beach。。。and the mystery begins。While this is the 8th book in the series, it's the first one I've picked up。 And that wasn't a problem。 The tale can be read as a stand-alone。This was a nice balance of adventure, fun, friendship, mystery, and information, too。 Teddy and Summer work well together, but as with real friends, do have moments where they understand each other better than others。 It creates a natural relationship and makes the two easy to root for as they solve the mystery and deal with other issues。I do enjoy the animal twist and added information this series includes。 Teddy and Summer know their way around creatures/animals, which allows a smooth addition of facts and information without ever feeling as if it's being purposely pushed into the tale。 It just flows right in。 The ecology side isn't any different。 Modern concerns about the environment weave into the mystery and experiences smoothly。。。like Teddy collecting trash while walking through exploded whale guts along the beach (sounds a little strange but it works)。 While there is this learning goodness, it's the quick-paced adventure, which makes this enjoyable to read。 Something is always happening, and it's hard to see what's coming next。 Not only does Teddy have to figure out what's happening with the whale and the disappearing beach, but even the other characters have their own personalities and problems。 There's family, relationships and friendship, too。 The villain was also well-placed, and while not carrying quite as much depth, offered a worthy adventure for Teddy to work with。It's a smooth read packed with information and excitement, and I'm looking forward to see what will come next (and I'll be heading back to see what other adventures Teddy has already had)。 I received an ARC and really enjoyed this tale。 。。。more

E ARC provided by Edelweiss PlusWhen an inconsiderate worker sets off fire crackers near FunJungle when the weather has been very dry and a kangaroo is spooked, a horrible fire burns down the substandard employee trailer park。 Because JJ McCracken, the owner, has always been concerned about the threat of fire, he is prepared with crews that save the zoo, if not the housing or surrounding area。 Teddy doesn't have a place to stay; his father is off to Argentina, and his mother can sleep in her off E ARC provided by Edelweiss PlusWhen an inconsiderate worker sets off fire crackers near FunJungle when the weather has been very dry and a kangaroo is spooked, a horrible fire burns down the substandard employee trailer park。 Because JJ McCracken, the owner, has always been concerned about the threat of fire, he is prepared with crews that save the zoo, if not the housing or surrounding area。 Teddy doesn't have a place to stay; his father is off to Argentina, and his mother can sleep in her office at the zoo。 When his girlfriend Summer suggests that he goes with her and her mother to visit California, his parents can't really object。 They are staying in an exclusive beachfront community with Binka, a model friend of Summer's mother。 Also along is Doc, who is visiting the marine animal center in Long Beach。 When an enormous whale is found dead on the beach, Teddy and Summer want to investigate。 Cass, a scientist tasked with performing an autopsy on the animal, is willing to talk to the kids when she realizes they have a scientific interest, and Doc takes a shine to her and wants to help。 When the whale explodes in a spectacularly messy way, Teddy gets involved in the investigation。 At first, it seems like it might just be a college prank, and two local Harvard students are implicated, but Cass and Doc soon realize that the amount of explosives involved are not something they could have put in place。 There's also a local beach resident who claims that the beach is disappearing, and it does look like sand is disappearing。 This isn't FunJungle, though, and Summer seems to be interested in hanging out with people other than Teddy。 Will he be able to able to solve the mystery without her?Strengths: Like the Texas adventure in Tyrannosaurus Wrecks and the Yellowstone excursion in Bear Bottom , it's good to see Teddy and Summer being able to venture away from the zoo。 Summer's background gives them the wealth and privilige to be able to do this, while Teddy's family's problems ground him。 There's enough goofiness (like the exploding whale) to make this appealing to younger readers, and enough ecological mystery to appeal to older ones。 Teddy's relationship with Summer sees some ups and downs; all 8 books of the series take place over a very short period of time even though the first was published in 2010, so this is realistic。 Summer's celebrity, being used to hawk eco-conscious clothing, is appealing。 There are some excellent villains, some animal highjinks, and, of course, Teddy's uncanny ability to solve the case。 I very much appreciate that Gibbs' addresses environmental issues in his books, and also that he is responsive to reader suggestions and crafted a marine adventure after getting a lot of requests。 Perhaps Teddy and Summer need to follow Doc and Cass to Baja so that Gibbs can write stories to go with titles that were suggested, like Twist and Spout and License to Krill。Weaknesses: The villains have improved since the first FunJungle book, but I would like to see them with a little more nuance。 I'm a fan of characters who read a bit gray, although my students never complain about ones that are more black and white。 What I really think: These books are a little easier to read out of order than the Spy School series, which is really helpful when I have a lot of students reading through them。 These are always such fun, and do get better with each installment。 I'm looking forward to seeing what happend next, but it may be time to return to FunJungle for a bit! 。。。more

Teddy and Summer are back in the latest FunJungle mystery。 This one takes place in Southern California, mostly Malibu, and features a dead whale and disappearing beaches。 The mysteries themselves are fantastic, with great messages about the environment。 Teddy & Summer hit a few bumps in their relationship and we see their growth as they work it out。 This eight book in the series has a lot more depth to it, while still retaining the action, adventure, and humor the FunJungle series is loved for。 Teddy and Summer are back in the latest FunJungle mystery。 This one takes place in Southern California, mostly Malibu, and features a dead whale and disappearing beaches。 The mysteries themselves are fantastic, with great messages about the environment。 Teddy & Summer hit a few bumps in their relationship and we see their growth as they work it out。 This eight book in the series has a lot more depth to it, while still retaining the action, adventure, and humor the FunJungle series is loved for。 Since Gibbs lives in SoCal, Malibu and its residents are portrayed very accurately。 Highly recommended for grades 4 & up。 eARC provided by publisher via Edelweiss 。。。more
